WLEEA Academy Info

What is the Academy?

WLEEA operates a week-long Explorer Academy twice a year. The Academy is a full-time training environment that mirrors the atmosphere at the real law enforcement Academy. Advisors and Instructors from all around Washington State come together to provide top-notch instruction and training.

During the week of training, Explorers experience aspects of police work firsthand. Classroom time and practical application of skills are combined to provide a challenging and fun week.

There are five ways to participate in the Academy...

  • Basic Academy (for first-time Explorers)
  • Advanced Academy (for Explorers that have successfully completed the Basic Academy)
  • E.A.A. - Explorer Advisor Assistant (after several Academies the Explorer helps out with the administration of the Academy)
  • A.P.D. - Academy Police Department (This is what it's all about! Explorers apply to the Academy Police Department like a real job. If accepted, they get to work patrol shifts on the Academy campus for the week, doing tons of mock scenes. A.P.D. is treated like an actual Police Department in every way.)
  • Leadership Academy (The mission is to prepare senior explorers for the hiring process. The acceptance requirements for Leadership Academy are the same as for APD. There's training on the written test, oral boards, polygraphs, PT Test and so on.)

Application / Registration Paperwork

An application is required for each Explorer to attend the Academy. That application is available below in two formats:

  • Download the Microsoft Word file here
  • View the application on your Web browser here

A waiver is also required by the Department of the Army (The ARMY graciously allows us to use there facilities on Fort Lewis and Camp Murray). That waiver form is available below:

  • Download the rich text file here

NOTICE: WLEEA will be getting strict on the deadline for Academy applications in the near future, so be sure to have yours turned in on time! There will be a $10.00 (per person) late fee added for applications that are not received or postmarked before the deadline.

Also, posts/departments that have not fully paid the registration fees from the last Academy will not be allowed to send any Explorers to the upcomming Academy.
